GPP Academy - Exploring Sustainability at Six Pacific Place

Swire Properties recently hosted an exclusive tour of Six Pacific Place (“6PP”), the latest addition to the Pacific Place portfolio. 6PP is a Grade-A office building which stands as a testament to Swire Properties’ commitment to sustainability, innovation and heritage preservation. More than 60 participants from 38 companies explored the building’s integrated heritage features and ‘green’ design elements, which are examples of how smart design can honour the past and can shape a sustainable future.

Where Heritage Meets Innovation

6PP combines modern building features with elements of the neighbourhood’s cultural history. At its heart is the preserved Po Wah Gate, a nostalgic remnant of a post-war building which connects past and present. Adjacent to this historical icon is the Green Wall, a soil-less planted wall with a built-in irrigation system that conserves water, purifies air and enhances the streetscape.

Art further enriches the building’s identity. Acclaimed illustrator Jonathan Jay Lee, who previously contributed to Marvel Comics, was commissioned to create a temporary mural on the hoarding around the building. His vibrant artwork celebrates the transformation of the neighbourhood adjacent to 6PP while paying homage to the area’s heritage.

Sustainability in Action

6PP incorporates sustainability into its design and operating systems, with a focus on measurable benefits and long-term impact:

  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Monitoring: Throughout the building, IAQ sensors monitor environmental parameters such as CO2, PM2.5 and humidity, ensuring optimal indoor air quality.

  • Biophilic Design: The 2/F Podium Garden and 14/F Sky Garden are designed with air-purifying plants and irrigated by rainwater recycling systems which reduce water use. These green spaces provide tenants with access to nature, enhancing mental wellbeing and productivity.

  • High-Performance Building Features: 6PP incorporates energy-saving features, including a highly efficient air conditioning system, LED lighting, and water-efficient fixtures. Its strategic orientation maximises natural light exposure in workstations while minimising solar heat gain. A “Digital Twin with AI Optimisation” system further supports energy efficiency by analysing the building’s performance data, enabling building management personnel to make the best decisions regarding conserving energy.

  • Solar Energy System: The 27/F rooftop houses a solar panel system to provide renewable electricity for the landlord’s building operations.

A Model for Sustainable Design

6PP has earned five platinum green building certifications: BEAM Plus, LEED, WELL, WiredScore and SmartScore. These accolades reflect the successful integration of environmentally responsible design with elements that enhance tenant wellbeing and operational efficiency.

The tour provided participants with a closer look at how the building’s features work —from biophilic gardens that connect people with nature to advanced technologies that optimise energy and resource use. By sharing its design strategies, Swire Properties aims to inspire tenants and stakeholders to adopt similar practices, as a collective effort is needed to address environmental challenges.
